💡✍️ADN #062: Learn To Write Songs Like Your Heroes
Jan 28, 2024Hey Friends -
Welcome to the Artist Development Newsletter.
Every Sunday, I send an email providing actionable tips for artists and industry on one area of the music business.
Last week, we talked about how songs hide in plain sight.
You can re-read last week’s newsletter here if you want to refresh.
Today, I want to give you an exercise to learn how to write like your favorite songwriters.
Let’s go — ->
— — -
This is simple.
Who is your favorite artist or songwriter?
What is your favorite song they’ve written?
Once you’ve answered those two questions…
Get out a piece of paper.
Handwrite the lyrics.
Study the rhyme scheme.
The length of each line.
The way the lyric uses imagery, alliteration, illusion, etc.
How often is the title used?
Are all the lyrics written toward the hook?
Dive in and find out.
Write the lyrics and study the structure.
This will teach you great writing.
You will see it with your eyes and feel it flowing from your pen to your paper.
Next week, I’m going to give you a first look at something I’ve been building.
For now, grab a pen and some paper and start writing.
See you next Sunday!
