💡✍️ADN #056: "On Songwriting" - A Recommendation
Dec 24, 2023Hey Friends -
Welcome to the Artist Development Newsletter.
Every Sunday, I send an email providing actionable tips for artists and industry on one area of the music business.
Last week, we discussed seven steps to turn your art into income.
You can re-read last week’s newsletter here if you want to refresh.
Today’s newsletter is going to be a little different than usual.
I want to recommend a book to you.

Nashville is known for many things these days.
Broadway, hot chicken, bachelorette parties, and country music, to name a few.
But, to me, the roots of Music City are in the songs.
There wouldn’t be the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman Auditorium, or The Exit/In without songs to sing on their stages.
Nashville is a city built on songs.
My friend and sometimes co-writer, Aaron Espe, released a book this month titled “On Songwriting” that encapsulates the experience of being a songwriter in Nashville as well as anything I’ve read.
The book provides “practical tips and insights from a decade in Music City.”
“On Songwriting” is packed with wisdom from years of writing songs in Nashville.
It is broken into five sections:
- On Craft
- On Mindset
- On Dealing With Your Inner Critic
- On Co-Writing
- On Music City & The Industry
Each reads conversationally with actionable advice that every songwriter should learn, know, or be reminded of.
No matter your writing stage, this book is a beautiful roadmap.
A guide for some and a reminder for many.
If you are looking for a gift for Christmas to give or receive, “On Songwriting” would be a great choice.
You can order it here.
See you next Sunday!
