💡✍️ADN #046: How To Become An Escape Artist
Oct 08, 2023Hey Friends -
Welcome to the Artist Development Newsletter.
Every Sunday, I send an email providing actionable tips for artists and industry on one area of the music business.
Last week, we talked about “Effort vs. Impact.”
We broke down a simple framework for weighing what to do next to improve your creativity and your business.
You can re-read last week’s newsletter here if you want to refresh.
A quick note:
I’ve added a free 15-minute video call to the website.
Think of this like an “Ask Me Anything.”
If you think I can help with your problem, or if you want to bounce around an idea, grab a time on my calendar here.
Today, we will talk about how to become an “Escape Artist” and why it is the #1 way to make fans.

People don’t remember every word you say; they remember how you make them feel.
People don’t listen to music to be reminded of their day jobs.
People listen to music to escape them.
People don’t go to concerts to see their exes.
People go to concerts to escape them.
People don’t get on social media to be reminded of their frustrations.
People get on social media to escape them.
Be the artist continually creating a great escape, and you’ll be the artist that people turn to whenever they need one.
And we all need one.
The trick here is to connect the narrative from your music to your social media, your concerts, your merchandise, and on and on.
The best escape artists meet their audience in their emotions by showing they have been there too and they understand.
Then, take your audience on a journey to escape their troubles, and as a by-product, you will escape yours by creating the audience you once wished you had and making the money you once wished you made.
Think of being an escape artist like being the narrator in a movie.
You are leading your audience’s great escape.
Song by song.
Album by album.
Video by video.
Tour by tour.
Social media post by social media post.
Merch piece by merch piece.
With each escape, you’ll convert people into fans and fans into super fans.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself about your music and how to connect it to your touring, social media, merchandise, and your fan’s escape.
Here is a simple spreadsheet to build out your Escape Artist plan.
Create the escape that represents who you are, and I guarantee you’ll soon be that artist for your audience.
See you next Sunday!
