๐กโ๏ธ ADN #005: The Art Of The Cold Email
Dec 25, 2022Hey Friends -
Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
Welcome to the Artist Development Newsletter.
Every Sunday, I send an email providing actionable tips for artists and industry on one area of the music business.
Last week we talked about how to schedule 1 month of social media content in 1 hour.
You can re-read last week’s newsletter here if you want to refresh.
Today we will discuss a simple 4-step system for writing and tracking your cold emails in 2023.
Let’s jump in.

Whether you’re an artist or work in the music industry, the art of the cold email is one that we all have struggled with perfecting.
Below are 4 simple steps to make a great 1st impression and be well on your way to a fantastic 2023.
1. Draft Three Email Templates
Example:
- Ask about open roles at (X) company.
- Recognize something (X) has accomplished.
- Mention a mutual connection or point in common with (X).
Here are 3 templates you can steal as a starting point -
- Cold Email (1)
Dear (X) Company,
I recently saw that you had open roles on (x platform).
I am interested in learning more about these opportunities.
I have been working as an (X profession) for the last (X) years and have experience in (list some of your experiences).
My skills and expertise would be an asset to your team.
I am attaching my resume here for your review.
Can we discuss the current openings further?
Thank you for your time,
[[YOUR NAME]]
- Cold Email (2)
Dear [Company],
I recently read about the fantastic work [X] has accomplished and wanted to reach out and congratulate you on your success.
I am a [professional] with a background in [field] and experience working with [companies].
I would love to speak with you further about any open roles at your company.
I am attaching my resume for your review.
I would love to discuss further how I can contribute to the success of [X] company.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
- Cold Email (3)
Dear [Company],
I hope this email finds you well.
I am writing to you because I recently learned that we have a mutual connection in [Name].
I am a professional with [X] years of experience in the field and am interested in exploring open roles at your company.
I have attached my resume for your reference, and I would love to schedule a call at your convenience to discuss this further.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
[[YOUR NAME]]
You could adapt this same concept as an artist pitching for gigs, press, etc.
Here are two free venue & festival pitch templates you can steal.
Now, let’s move on to step 2.
2. Create A Spreadsheet With Your Target Contacts
Add columns to track the template you used, your response rates, and your meeting rates.
3. Send Each Template To 20 People
Analyze the results, keep the top 2 performers, and delete the template with the lowest response/meeting rate.
Then draft up a new template version with the best performance and add it to the mix.
4. Rinse And Repeat Step Three
Every 20 emails, check your metrics and keep going.
Creating a list of 15 target companies and finding 10+ contacts at each.
This is how you get better results and more responses!
That’ll get you a minimum of 150 contacts.
When you email, start with the lowest priority companies/contacts and work your way up.
That way, you’ll save the best emails with the most data for the highest value.
Bonus Idea
Draft your first 20 emails over the holiday break and have them ready to go out in the new year.
That’s it!
I’ll drop a link to the google doc I use below.
Click “Make A Copy” under the “File” tab and make it your own.
Happy holidays!
Neil
